Europe’s compressed natural gas (CNG) market ended on a positive note in 2015. The Volkswagen Group declared that CNG sales were up by as much as six times in some countries. Spain witnessed the largest growth of new vehicle sales, while Italy, Germany and Sweden each performed well. VW's SEAT brand reached an all-time high market share of CNG vehicles in Spain at 80%. Total SEAT CNG sales reached 3,927 units during 2015, with the Mii Ecofuel performing best.
Forecasts for the future of the market are also optimistic. According to Navigant Research, total global sales of natural gas vehicles (NGVs) are expected to reach more than 35 million between 2015 and 2025, the majority of which will use CNG.
Speaking to Automotive World, Andrew Shepherd, SEAT’s CNG expert, described the importance of the fuel for the OEM. He also hinted at some new projects that will be announced during 2016.
