Sao Paulo show highlights segment shifts, stiff competition

This year's Sao Paulo show signals growing interest in SUVs/crossovers as well as luxury models, despite the overall market slowdown.

Brazilian sales are down 9% this year, as tougher credit conditions and a return to higher purchase taxes dampens demand. Sales for the full year are expected to show a decline from 2013 levels and competition among OEMs will only heat up. Amidst this background the Sao Paulo Auto Show - the largest automotive event in Latin America - opened its doors this week, offering manufacturers the opportunity to show off their latest and greatest offerings.
