Safety groups shine light on poor headlight performance

The IIHS began evaluating headlight performance earlier this year, and has so far found few good performers, writes Megan Lampinen

Vehicle headlights play a pivotal role in road safety but recent performance tests suggest they are consistently letting down drivers and pedestrians. Addressing shortcomings in this one area could make a significant difference to the safety statistics. "Improvements in headlights have considerable potential to improve safety because half of all fatal crashes happen at night or at dawn or dusk," Matt Brumbelow, Senior Research Engineer at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), told Automotive World.
