Plans to increase truck speeds spark debate

Supporters claim the move to increase HGV speed limits in the UK will save time for freight operators

In the UK, HGVs over 7.5 tonnes currently have an upper limit of 40mph (64kph) on single carriageway roads - a speed limit set in the 1960s and currently at odds with other large vehicles on roads, according to the Department for Transport (DfT). To address this, in a recent move, the government of England and Wales has decided to raise the speed limit for trucks on single carriageway roads to 50mph, sparking opposing views from many different groups.
