In many markets, telematics is current not only in vehicle production but also in the aftermarket, to allow cars to be connected even if they do not have the capability built-in. At Automotive Megatrends Europe 2014, Robert Stevens, Global Product Line Manager for Telematics at Delphi, spoke in the connected car stream, explaining the need along with the demand for Delphi's telematics device, which can be plugged into the OBD port of any car produced after 1990. The device can act as a computer to transmit data to the owner of the car to see how their vehicle is being driven, as well as providing data to the car garage, to let the driver know when their car is due a repair, before the part even stops working.
Automotive World caught up with Stevens after his presentation, to discuss his predictions on the future for retrofitted devices such as the one Delphi has produced, and how such devices can be used as UBI devices to lead to consumer benefits such as insurance savings.
