After months of fears, speculation and discussions between General Motors and the Australian government, the Detroit-based OEM last December its intention to cease its manufacturing operations in the country by 2017. The decision followed Prime Minister Tony Abbott's move to rule out extra federal government assistance to GM's local unit, Holden.
