In automotive engineering, there is currently a big focus on improving engine efficiency and fuel economy. With increasing competition from alternative powertrains, internal combustion engine engineers have to come up with new ways to tackle problems, including boosting, downsizing, lightweighting, down-speeding, and direct fuel injection. The International Engine of the Year awards was held this week, judged by 82 motoring journalists from 35 countries, and for the third year in a row, Ford’s 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine won.
