Canadian regulations threaten 6×2’s NA traction

Automotive World speaks to Meritor on the drivers as well as the obstacles for greater 6x2 uptake in North America.

In the battle to improve the fuel efficiency of heavy vehicles, engineers can turn to a number of areas. There are not only new engine technologies but also aerodynamic design, tyre technologies and drivetrain configurations, to name a few. Meritor is one of the companies pushing new axle technologies in the form of a 6x2 configuration. Although popular in Europe for its potential to improve efficiency, the North American market has been slow to pick up on the 6x2 design. Automotive World spoke to Karl Mayer, Meritor's Director of product strategy for North American axles, on the drivers as well as the obstacles for greater uptake in the region.
