Battery breakthrough prompts Toyota EV commitment

Remember when Toyota said EVs would never go beyond niche? The company has decidedly changed its tune, writes Megan Lampinen

Electric vehicles (EV) are looking increasingly inevitable and even the laggards are making long-term commitments. Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover were among the first to commit to fully electrified ranges. Volkswagen Group followed in September with what it claimed was the most comprehensive electrification initiative in the global automotive industry. Under the Group's Roadmap E it plans to electrify its entire model portfolio by 2030 at the latest. Others are making similarly ambitious pledges. General Motors, for example, has committed to introducing at least 20 new all-electric vehicles in the next six years. Now it's Toyota's turn.
